What will 2012 hold for facebook poker chips and social gaming?

Social gaming has been on a tear since early 2007 since the first games began appearing on Facebook and the first few players began betting their facebook poker chips at the tables with friends. Fast forward 5 years to 2012 and facebook poker applications and social games in general are still the hottest thing to hit the net since free porn. So what will the year ahead hold for facebook poker games?

There is much speculation that texas holdem game makers will soon offer real money gambling. Facebook may soon allow real money gambling on it’s platform, though it currently does not. Even so, social games are on countless other platforms where gambling is already permitted in legal jurisdictions, including Android, iOS, and Google+. These companies didn’t pursue real-money social games for any of these platforms.

So why have game makers been dragging their feet when it comes to real money gaming? These time & money costs are simply too great for the vast majority of game studios, and the compliance issues become increasingly prohibitive as you look at large game companies.

These huge pains have prevented Zynga and other game companies from offering real-money play to non-US players in spite of the huge profit opportunities. Game companies have been better off investing their limited resources into virtual currency revenue streams because they will monetize immediately, although relatively poorly.

Companies like Betable.com are coming out with innovative platform solutions that allow companies to let their players gamble online with real money without the need for a complicated and costly gambling license. They would, in effect, loan out their license to let game makers such as Pokerist, WSOP or Zynga utilize it in order to allow real money gambling while still playing with wsop poker chips or zynga poker chips.

Facebook is no stranger to online gaming. For some time now, it has offered its users the option of playing online games for Facebook credits as an alternative to real money. Earlier this year, Facebook changed its advertising policies, allowing online gambling companies to advertise in jurisdictions where such services are permitted.

In the past, Facebook has been quite strict when it comes to advertising online gambling business on its website. Now, Facebook’s Advertising Guidelines web page has a specific online gambling clause under the Gambling and Lotteries subsection of the Ad Content section, which reads: “Ads that promote or facilitate online gambling, games of skill or lotteries, including online casino, sports books, bingo, or poker, are only allowed in specific countries with prior authorization from Facebook.”

Whatever the future holds for online social games and virtual currencies like facebook poker chips or zynga poker chips, everyone can agree it’s going to be an exciting year for poker fans.

Could real money poker games be coming to Facebook soon?

Players have been gambling on facebook since early 2007, though with facebook poker chips in place of real money. But now there is chatter on the internet that real money gambling could make its way to Facebook sooner than we think.

According to eGaming Review, Facebook could be offering real money gambling to it’s members in the United Kingdom as early as 2012. While social game giant Zynga, make of the popular zynga texas holdem poker application that uses zynga poker chips in it’s games is not slated to get in to the real money gambling scene just yet, a long list of others have voiced their excitement at the opportunity, including Europe’s 888 Holdings and Gamesys.

While Facebook has been aggressively rolling out their facebook credits as the currency of choice for all facebook poker applications, as well as other games, real money gambling is widely expected to be utilized when they roll out their online casinos.  Interestingly, Facebook’s current Platform Policies explicitly prohibit any applications that provide “online gambling, games of skill or lotteries, including online casinos, sports books, bingo, or poker”.

Players in the US will have to buy facebook poker chips for the near term however, as gambling laws there still prohibit the exchange of money for games of luck such as texas holdem poker. But not to worry, the US congress is already debating ways to legalize and tax online poker games in the near future, so maybe with a little “luck” players from all over the world will soon be logging in to their facebook accounts to play poker instead of shady websites located on offshore servers in countries half way around the globe.
